The Earth Sphere was in a period of war.
Humanity has been divided in two and a conflict ensued. The ‘Naturals’ living on earth and the ‘Coordinators’ living within the space colonies.
While the ‘Naturals’ were human beings in their natural state, the ‘Coordinators’ were humans that were literally coordinated by combining their dominant genes before birth.
The old humans, in a sort of parental position, tried to hold dominance over the new, who had superior genes and were superior to Naturals in every respect. Perhaps it was a fear of seeing something superior. However, for those who were being dominated, it was nothing more than persecution.
Cosmic Era 70.
The conflict between these two groups came to a head when ‘Junius Seven,’ a space colony where many Coordinators lived, was destroyed at the hands of the Naturals. This event came to be known as the “Bloody Valentine” tragedy.
As a result of the incident, many Coordinators’ lives were lost in the vacuum of space.
And at that point, the Coordinators’ patience had reached its limit. They responded by forming “ZAFT,” a full-fledged military organization meant to defend their own people.
ZAFT’s forces took immediate action. In fighting against their father, the Naturals, they attacked their mother, the Earth.
Meanwhile, on Earth, various countries set their interests aside and cooperated to form an organization known as the Earth Alliance.
At the start of the war, the Earth Alliance, who boasted an overwhelming amount of material resources, seemed unassailable.
But their predictions betrayed them.
The ZAFT forces had developed ‘Mobile Suits,’ humanoid mobile weapons that turned the conventional view of combat on its head.
The versatile and easy to maneuver Mobile Suits overwhelmed the Earth Alliance with little effort.
A clash between a small number of superior weapons and a large army. The uneven battle was sometimes settled locally, but never in the grand scheme.
The war was exhausting, and it had already been eleven months since it began.
Even in the midst of a battle with no end in sight, people still need to live. When it comes to Naturals and Coordinators, ‘survival’ is the same.
The battles that had become a part of daily life brought about major changes in certain professions.
Junk Dealers recover and rebuild destroyed mecha. In this era of war, with destruction taking place faster than production, recycling work like this is vastly important.
Others have taken up a more directly combat-oriented profession.
Mercenaries. People who fight without principle as long as there’s money to be made. For them, it doesn’t matter if you’re a Natural or a Coordinator (in fact, many mercenary groups are made up of a mix of both Naturals and Coordinators). All that matters is the money. Therefore, they’d work for the Earth Alliance or ZAFT, as long as they could pay up. It wasn’t unusual for comrades who had fought side by side to be fighting one another the next day.
This is a story of those who survive in this war-torn era with strength and courage.
